Made in Brooklyn, New York, this Hay Budden's trademark, weight stamp, inspector's mark and serial number are all t T is an inspectors mark, a '5' or the front foot and the number '5' under the horn. The weight mark '71' is under the trademark. The anvil's serial number is 189918, and according to Richard Postman's book 'Anvils in America' this Solid Wrought Iron anvil was forged in 1911. It is the third style anvil Hay Budden produced. This style included a major change with the method of making the top half of the anvil.

Instead of welding a tool-steel face plate on to the wrought iron body, the entire anvil from the waist up was forged from one piece of open hearth tool steel. The base was forged from one piece of the best American Wrought Iron available. Postman's book goes on to say that Hay Buddens were considered the best American made anvil. Hay Budden claims they used the best material available and were produced by the finest American craftsmen.
