Your friend is right,I have driven them like that when I was young and just didn't want to spend money so, if I were you and it seems to be alright, take some sandpaper and clean real good around the cracked area and just take you a small piece of tin like maybe a top off a small can and also sand it,lay on top of the area and just spread some JB Weld completely over it and smooth it out and let it set for a good while this will keep ther dirt and water out of the transmission and will last as long as you own the car.
