My brother has been using my 7 or 8 year old Humax IRCI 5400 to receive freesat channels, Recently - he tells me - the receiver 'died'. Apparently when turned on it simply displays 3 flashing dots on the digital panel, but in every other respect seems dead. A Google search has taken me to some sites and forums which appear to suggest that in fact the receiver is OK but that this is some kind of fault-code, and it indicates that 'channel settings are corrupted'. The forum posts I have found then go into tech jargon about downloading firmware (how?), using an HNFsmart program (what's that?), loading new settings (how and from where?) and so on. Completely incomprehensible to me as a non-tech.

Can anyone kindly (a) explain what the problem is and what the flashing dots mean; and then most important (b) give me - or tell me where to find - a step-by-step guide in plain English with no weird abbreviations which tells me how to get the receiver running again? It seems an obvious question, but if the receiver won't respond to controls and doesn't display anything either on its panel or on the TV screen, how on earth do you get it to do anything like reloading settings? How does the firmware or whatever get put into the receiver? That's why I seek clear step-by-step help!
