Thompson M1a1 Serial Number Range

Can anyone advise me if it is correct for an Auto-Ordance WWII Thompson M1 SMG to have the serial number in the range 123xxx? Also, would a war-time Thompson made by AO have the name on the rear right-hand side of receiver 'AUTO-ORDANCE CORPORATION' with 'BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A.' I'm trying to confirm if this is a genuine AO WWII manufactured M1 or a put together one, and what year it may have been made. Are there other markings or features that might assist in confirming its authenticity? Thanks, Mike.

Thompson M1 Serial Numbers

I think that serial range would be about right for an M1A1 and yes the address should be on the right rear. If it was a post war gun made by Numrich arms the address would say West Hurley, NY instead of Bridgeport, CT. All the M1's and M1A1's built for the real Auto Ordnance Corp were wartime guns as the design was wartime and there was no production after the war. The Auto Ordnance company was really a holding company who used contractors to make and assemble guns and parts.

They went out of business in 1944 or 45. The assets of the business were apparently sold to Ira Trask of Numrich Arms who used the auto ordnance name whether he was entitled to or not. As far as I know the machineguns built by Numrich all had the west hurley NY address and were built in the 80's.

They didn't sell well and needed lots of work to get going properly. Can anyone advise me if it is correct for an Auto-Ordance WWII Thompson M1 SMG to have the serial number in the range 123xxx? Savage Arms in New York and Auto Ordnance Corp in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They were both marked as you indicated above. You can tell which factory by turning gun upside down and checking area in front of mag well. Savage made guns marked 'S' and Auto Ordnance guns marked 'AO'.

Serial # 123xxx would probably be marked M1 unless arsenal coverted to a fixed firing pin gun in which case it would be stamped M1 then hand stamped with A1. If you want to learn more go to Thompson forum. Jim, The 1928A1's had the 'AO' or 'S' prefix on the serial numbers, but the M1 & M1A1's did not. As I remember the Savage M1A1 that I used to have had an 'S' stamped on the bottom of the lower between the back of the pistol grip and in front of the stock. I think Auto Ord and Savage also had assigned serial number blocks like the M1 Carbine, but I fear that brain cell is no longer functional. Cisco Mind Share Learning Game Download.

DougDoug, Yes, the '28 had either 'S' or 'AO' in front of the serial no. The M1/M1A1 had either a 'S' or 'AO' stamped on the underside between the mag well and foregrip. If Savage and Auto Ordnance had assigned serial block, I've never seen it in print.
